Safety Valves

Safety valves for ship building and industrial applications

Are you looking for safety valves for a pipeline project for example or for other sealed systems? You will find an overview of the different product categories of safety valves on this page. We are glad to be at your disposal with our specialists helping you make the right choice. We are also happy to advise our customers on the professional installation in their system. We can offer the right fittings for your application off the shelf as we are a dealer stocking products from well-known manufacturers.

But: Why is a safety valve important in installations and what functions do they have?

What is a safety valve?

The safety valve is important if prohibited overpressure occurs in a container or equipment. It is the last resort to discharge or blow off pressure when automatic control or monitoring devices have failed to equalise pressure. Safety valves are a type of safety fittings and as the name suggests, this valve is used to protect against overpressure. The scope of application should not be different as this safety device is the last safeguard. They are always provided with a set response pressure, which is adjusted to suit the area of application.

Various different causes can lead to overpressure developing in (pressure) vessels. The following list shows some of the reasons for malfunctions:

  • Cooling system malfunction
  • Pipe bursting in heat exchangers
  • Chemical reactions
  • Thermal expansions
  • Fire (external fire)
  • Blocked discharges

Such scenarios must be avoided. So it is important to select the correct design of the safety valve during the planning stage.

What distinguishes safety valves?

  • Approved valves according to TÜV testing or DNV testing
  • They play an essential role in safeguarding the operation of the plant
  • Normal stroke opening or full stroke opening
  • High discharge rates

There are a range of different safety valves

Spring loaded safety valves

The individual conditions of use and requirements play a key role when ensuring that spring-loaded safety valves work reliably. A plant operator should therefore focus on optimising resources for safe operation and utilisation of the pressure limits. Don't forget that in addition to the usual parameters for dimensioning, the existence of counter-pressure must also be taken into account when planning. The spring-loaded safety valve allows the respective volume of a medium to flow out automatically. It therefore automatically uses the fluidity of the particular medium without requiring the support of other energies. This ensures that a predetermined pressure is not exceeded. The valve ensures normal working conditions in technical installations and acts as a final safeguard.

So that the spring-loaded safety valve can guarantee the essential functions perfectly, the system planner must design the system carefully and the entire system installation must be executed professionally. It is important for the inner parts that the spring and the cone (closing body) can work without disruption. If a malfunction should occur during the necessary work (also called stroke), this for example could lead to delayed response, flutter or lower performance. In this case, the safety of the entire installation can no longer be guaranteed. It is therefore important that the safety valves are tested and regularly maintained. The fittings are approved according to European (DIN EN ISO) or American (ASME) standards. These are subject to strict standardisation and component monitoring.

Standard spring-loaded safety valves are available in different materials (body) and nominal sizes.

Straight safety valves

Straight free-blow safety valves are available in various pressure setting ranges. These are generally used for compressed air and other neutral gases. They can also act as vent valves or relief valves. These valves are usually made of brass.

Other designs of safety valves are proportional safety valves or full stroke safety valves.

They are available with different connections. With a male tread, female thread, or also a flange connection.
